        Although the fossil record of the family Equidae boasts at least three dozen genera, only one genus, Equus, has survived to the present (MacFadden 1999).  Two hundred and thirty species of the genus Equus have been named, but only six to eight of these have survived into recent times, the number being subject to debate among different classification schemes (MacFadden 1999).  Links to descriptions of the modern species of Equus are found below:
