Types of Plesiosaurs
There were two "basic" types of Plesiosaurs that existed, these included those with short necks and those with long necks. Evidence has shown that the short-necked Plesiosaurs has 13 neck vertebrae while their long necked counter parts has as many as 76 (Callaway, Nicholls, 1997). There is debate on the classification of the the short-necked Plesiosaurs and whether they should actually be classified as Pliosaurs. |
An example of a short necked Plesiosaur (Pliosaur) is the Kronosaurus. | |
An example of a long-necked Plesiosaur is the Cryptoclidus. |
