Pollen
The male gametes in flowering plants are pollen grains. Pollen is derived from Latin, meaning fine flour. Pollen consists of 2 or 3 cells combined as a unit. The vegetative cell is the largest, the other 2 lie within the large cell and are sperm cells. Pollen has a variety of shapes and sizes but it is typically spherical, and ranges up to 300um in diameter. Fossilized pollen can be related to modern plant pollen and can provide information of plant life in the past. Radiocarbon dating is used to date pollen from the Quaternary deposits. |
