Bisaccate Grains
This picture shows a
podocarpus pollen grain (left) and a grain from a pine tree (right).
Coniferous trees such
as pine, podocarpus and spruce produce a pollen grain consisting of a single
central body with two attached bladders. Pollination of coniferous trees is
dependent on the spreading of the grains by wind. The bladders enable the
pollen grains to travel over long distances in the air. Bisaccate grains are
present in the fossil record beginning from the Devonian.
