An Overview of the Island

The island of Martinique is located in the central part of the Lesser Antillies between the islands of St. Lucia and Dominica. Martinique is 1100 square kilometres and at its greatest lenght is 70 kilometres and 30 kilometres at its greatest width. From the central peak of Mont Carbet and the northern peak of Mont Pelee, which is the highest peak on the island at 1397m, the island slopes down gently to the southern end of the island. The northern part of Martinique is covered in tropical rainforest.
