Burrows are similarly conspicuous in other landscapes. An air passenger arriving to Charles de Gaulles Airport in Paris will be struck by the mosaic of molehills, the single most prominent feature visible from air between the take-off lanes.
European parks and lawns are riddled with mole-hills. The European mole feeds largely on a single species of earthworm, Lumbricus terrestris, which is absent from North America. In Eastern Europe, mole’s activity is limited by the hibernation of this earthworm. Still, the soil is so full with burrows that the ground sinks under the weight of feet.
