Geochronology

Geochronology is defined as the dating of rocks. Because pollen represents a narrow time range and is present in sediments lacking other fossils, it can be a very good tool for relative dating of those sediments. Certain assemblages have been studied extensively and dated by different means. This is then a good tool to determine the age of sediments, which could otherwise not be dated with other applicable methods.
