Whales (cont'd)

Similarily, the fossils of a beluga whale, the Delphinapterus leucas, were found in the Champlain Sea sediments of Lake Champlain in Vermont.  A picture of its fossilized skull is shown below.

The fossils of many other whale species have been discovered in these marine sediments.  They include Pocoena phocoena, the harbour porpoise; Megaptera novaeangliae, the humpback whale; and Balaeonoptera physalus, the finback whale.
