This picture shows the destruction of the Japanese city of Kobe. This earthqauke caused considerable damage to the city and surronding areas.

The fault line of which the city rested was a secondary fault that was considered to be inactive.

This could be a strong indicator to the Pacific Northwest region that although the region is not as tectonically as California, it should take measures to prepare for just such a disaster.
