In the Beginning...

Up until about 80 million years ago, New Zealand, or the area where New Zealand is now, consisted of a series of volcanic arcs. It was located between Australia and Antarctica, on the southeastern edge of the ancient continent of Gondwana. It is not known whether there was life on these islands because this land has either been eroded or metamorphised, leaving no fossils behind.
