This
photo shows orange-coloured carbonate mineral globuals found in ALH84001.
Their structure and chemistry suggest that they may have been formed with
assistance of primitive bacteria-like living organisms. During the two
year study, the NASA research team found organic molecules and possible
microscopic fossils inside of carbonate minerals such as these in the meteorite.(NASA)
This
is an enlarged false coloured backscatter electron immage of fractured
surface of a chip of ALH84001 meteorite showing distribution of carbonate
globules. The green is orthopyroxene and the carbonate is orange.
Iron sulfides and magnitite were also found. These minerals are commonly produced by anaerobic bacteria and other microscopic organisms.
