As seen from the 1972 probe the Mariner 9, Mars was covered in outflow channels which were formed by catastrophic floods with distinctive flow features such as teardrop-shaped tails and islands.
Evidence for water is also seen in the alteration minerals found on the surface of Mars such as salt and clay.
