Today, we know so much about the physical characteristics of mammoths because their bones and mummified bodies are continually being found all over the northern continents of the world. The more spectacular mammoth finds involve the discovery of mammoth carcasses that have been thawed out of the arctic permafrost in Alaska and Siberia. These bodies are often in an incredible state of preservation, so that all of their physical traits are readily apparent, including the contents of their stomachs, which yield information on mammoth diets.
