In Darwins book,Origin of Species (1859), he tried to explain the current distribution of animals and plants in terms of their dispersal froma a single center over the extant geography of the globe. He uses evolution to account for geographical relationships of taxa. Darwin also allowed for the rising and falling of land surfaces relative to sea level to explain some of the distribution of animals and plants (Panchen 1992).
