Phylogenetic systematics classifies species on the basis of their most advanced characters, not on overall similarity. In phylogenetics there is a classification called sister groups, this is where there are only two groups or species that share a specific derived character (Patterson 1997).
Cladograms are used in phylogenetics to classify sister groups, such as in the diagram below.
