Several generations of fossil burrows at a marine omission surface (1st generation, dashed line, 2nd generation, solid line, 3rd generation, filled). Redrawn from: Bromley 1975 | ||||||||||
The geological metaphor for time is thickness. Since firm ground is a surface of non-deposition, it has no thickness. Soils, like other surfaces of non-deposition, do not grow up, they do not grow much down – time is manifested in the density of biogenic structures, commonly, burrows (cf. Bromley 1975). |
