Introduction

The La Brea tar pits are now located in the downtown core of Los Angeles. The La Brea tar pits were once located 7 miles outside the city, but as L.A. has continually grown and expanded, the tar pits were swallowed up. The tar pits remain today, as a major attraction in L.A., the 23 acre site was donated to Los Angeles County as a historic and scientific site by Allen G. Hancock, with a museum and research facility on-site to house the spectacular finds of La Brea.
