The fossil vertebrates, of the same age as the Axel Heiberg flora, found at nearby Ellsemere Island inclded alligators, hippopotamus, rhinocerous, turtules, rodents, and birds.

The colder dark winters could have lead to adaptations such as hibernation or migration. Many of the modern ancestors of these fauna do just that.
