The Prisoner of St. Pierre
Louis Cyparis, was imprisoned on the morning of the fatal eruption. Three different stories have been conjured to suggest why he was there. The first story is that he was thrown in jail the night before for being drunk in public. He probably was going to be released sometime the next day.
The second story is that he was sentenced to death for murder and was awaiting his execution that was scheduled for May 10th.
The third story is that is was sentenced to eight days in jail for assault and battery. Either of the stories could be the truth but who is to say different. Once he was rescued, his sentence was commuted by the French Goverment.
