The Calm Before the Storm

On May 7, a billowing cloud of smoke was seen descending from Mont Pelee. Later that day, the volcano remained relatively quiet. It was reported by the Commission of Inquiry that the volcano didn't pose any threat to St. Pierre. Despite these statements, many people were planning on leaving the next morning. Explosions and incandescent columns of ash continued to rise from the crater throughout the night.
