STRATIGRAPHY

Stratigraphy is the study of the distribution of strata (rock layers) in time and space. The goal of the stratigrapher is to observe, describe, and interpret sequences of strata in terms of the events and processes of the Earth's history. Diachronus deposition (identical rock units being deposited at different times) and facies change (horizontal variations of lithology) often make this a confusing task.
