Homotrema rubrum
Distribution:
Life habit and the waves and currents which distribute
the sediments control the distribution of Homotrema
in modern carbonate sediments on the Bermuda Platform. Homotrema
provides a good measure of proximity of the reef as it decreases in abundance
systematically away from it. The species is an excellent indicator of the
direction of transport of sand-sized carbonate shoal sediments on the Bermuda
Platform. It's distribution in sediments determined that sand-sized shoal
detritus is dispersed a long distance seaward down the Bermuda slope. In
contrast, the shoal detritus is not transported very far from the lagoon,
it can also be useful for interpreting Pleistocene land exposed sediments.
