HISTORY OF THE CHAMPLAIN SEA

Regression

Approximately 10,300 years B.P., the Champlain Sea basin began to rise due to the effects of isostatic rebound.  This caused the bedrock ridge that formed the north end of Lake Champlain to raise and consequently impede the sea water from entering the basin.  By about 10,000 years B.P., the sea had entirely receded from its bay and the present fluvial system began to develop.
